The Cultural Alliance of Tupelo and Lee County is committed to preserving and cultivating the visual and performing arts for all to enjoy. Through museums, arts organizations, local government entities and citizen volunteers the arts community has dedicated itself to cultural excellence. Ensuring a high quality of life for citizens and fostering a sound appreciation of the arts is the goal of each group. The CATLC umbrellas 22 member organizations who work diligently to increase awareness and enjoyment of the arts and culture for all of our citizens and visitors.

GOALS

  1. Organize and publish a comprehensive cultural resource directory
  2. Partner with the Link Centre for programming, renovation, and public art installation (statue, mural, etc.)
  3. Sponsor a cultural arts scholarship to benefit educators and/or students in Lee County
  4. Create an annual fund raising event
  5. Establish a monthly cultural education speaker series (3rd Thursdays of each month)
  6. Build a relationship with the Mississippi Arts Commission and participate in appropriate programs
  7. Establish a CATLC Foundation as a means to accept donations

Mississippi Daughters of the American Revolution

Price: This event is free of charge

Ms. Margaret DeMoville of the Mississippi Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will present two programs on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the Natchez Trace Parkway Visitor Center, near Tupelo, Mississippi. The program will emphasize the critical role that the Mississippi DAR played in the commemoration of the Old Natchez Trace and ultimately the creation of the Natchez Trace Parkway. Margaret DeMoville is a native of the Tupelo area and has always been very involved in the community. As an artist, she helped paint murals in the Parkway Visitor Center. She is a member of more than 20 historical and patriotic organizations and an Honorary State Regent and National Past Vice President General of the DAR.

Art Camp with local artist Glenn Payne

Location: Link Centre
Price: $65.00 per child per week or $110.00 for two children

Ages 3-7 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Ages 8-12 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Both groups will explore the different methods of making a piece of artwork through the basics of drawing and painting. The class will also discuss famous artists and their diffrerent styles of work so that the children can see what spurred the artist to paint in that manner. Group 1: will have an emphasis in getting to know the different mediums we can use at artists, while expanding on the children's knowledge of the basics of art. Group 2:will continue the growth of basic knowledge of the fundamentals of ART while building an appreciation and understanding of visual storytelling.

A special program of dulcimer music will be provided by the North Mississippi Dulcimer Association from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the Parkway Visitor Center located at milepost 266 near Tupelo, Mississippi. The North Mississippi Dulcimer Association teaches dulcimer history, tradition, craftsmanship, and music by sharing its knowledge and talents. The Appalachian mountain dulcimer is the first instrument developed in the United States. Dating back to the early 1800s, the dulcimer is an instrument whose very name means “sweet sound.” The National Park Service and the North Mississippi Dulcimer Association invite everyone to listen to the soft sweet sounds of the dulcimer and learn of its extensive history.

Pioneer Day

The Tombigbee Pioneer Group will perform living history demonstrations that show the challenges faced and creative solutions developed by those Americans who lived in the area from the 1700s to 1840. The demonstrations will take place at the Natchez Trace Parkway Visitor Center (located at milepost 266 near Tupelo, Mississippi), from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2010. The public is invited to watch pioneer lifestyle activities that often include corn-shuck doll making, basket weaving, beading, quill pen demonstrations, and a longhunter’s program involving early medicines. Leatherworking and mountain dulcimer demonstrations will also be offered throughout the day. Children are invited to participate by dressing up in pioneer clothes and trying these activities firsthand.

Since its founding in 1983 by Michael Levine, Dallas Brass has become one of America's foremost musical ensembles.
