The location of the Tupelo Buffalo Park & Zoo began as a cattle ranch run by Dan Franklin. In 1997, Dan added buffalo and slowly started removing the cattle. At one time, Dan had 300 buffalo, which was the largest herd of buffalo East of the Mississippi River. In 2001, the construction of the zoo began and the Tupelo Buffalo Park and Zoo officially opened in November. The park is now located on 210 acres and boasts over 260 animals. The park is home to a 19 foot tall Giraffe, Tall Boy, who is one of the tallest giraffes in the United States. It is also home to the world famous Oliver, a Capuchin monkey, whose 2 escapes in 2007 made newspapers all over the world. Oliver’s escapes were even mentioned on The Colbert Report and David Letterman's Top 10 List. Oliver is now the proud father of 6 baby Capuchin monkeys. Some of the other animals you can see at the park are Zebras, an African Lion, Ring-tail Lemurs, Camel, Yak, and many more!! Some interesting features in the park include feeding the animals. You can feed the goats, sheep, deer and many other animals. The kids always love the pony rides, zip line, and playing in the fort! Enjoy the Bison tour that takes you out in to the pasture where you can come face to face with lots of animals including buffalo, zebras, water buffalo, and Watusi cattle! Don't forget our annual Pumpkin Patch throughout October where you can enjoy hay rides, a corn maze, and picking your own pumpkin!! FREE admission for children 12 months and younger!
